Lola's Kinky Boots

Hi!

So I had a fabulous day in New York on Wednesday and I have to say, it was desperately needed. When Ally picked me up at Penn Station I had been too stressed and definitely sad, and by the time I left on Wednesday evening I just couldn't stop smiling.

Would you like to see? ;-)

10:03 am I arrived by Amtrak in Penn Station. I had to sit next to this kind of obnoxious businessman the whole way up and I was tempted to play a prank on him, but since he was a stranger I decided against it. This left me feeling too mischievous, so as I waited for Ally I texted my friend Brenna, who was joining us in NYC, and played a joke on her instead.

Meghan: Brenna I think I'm lost. These signs all say Newark.
Brenna: OMFG DID YOU GET OFF THE TRAIN IN NEW JERSEY!!

No, no I didn't. Although, to be fair, New York and Newark sound the same when you have headphones on. Poor Ally arrived to me cackling at my phone like a madwoman. Brenna came into Grand Central and I'd never been there so Ally and I walked over to meet her.

We decided to wait for the restaurant where we were eating lunch to open by having a breakfast snack in the form of gelato. Let me tell you, it was amazing.

I would show you the pulled pork sandwich I had for lunch but um, I ate that. A LOT. IT WAS AMAZING. (I need to go there again OMG.) I had the best time at lunch flirting with the waitstaff to make Ally and Brenna giggle. I might have misbehaved, but it was nice. I like hanging out with Ally and Brenna both together and separately because we always seem to have these silly moments sprinkled in serious conversations. They are seriously the best.

Scenes from NYC
I entertained Brenna and Ally with stories about my favorite old ladies from work while we waited.
And maybe was loud enough that most of the line heard me.
selfie!!

So Ally gave me the best present ever by asking me and my friend Brenna up to see Kinky Boots with her. That picture? That is the SET FROM MY SEAT! We were so close that when the lead started spitting during his song, the woman in front of me was flinching because we could feel it. This show was seriously the mood lift that I needed and Ally is just amazing for taking us.

I did have two or three problems with the story line. I don't like that the "bad girl" actually was a redeemable character but she is supposed to be a villain, and I don't like that the lead Charlie is sort of a despicable person who in the end gets exactly what he wants. I also feel bad because I felt a bit like it reinforced some double standards.

And then I have to remind myself that it was a charming, sweet musical that made me feel good. Even if I think the "bad girl" should have gotten the same amount of applause as the "good girl".

My Owl Dress I made to wear.

Can you believe this is a post office?
By the end of the day, we were all worn out and happy to be going home, but I have to say this was a magical day. I hope to get up there to visit Ally again, but I would LOVE to take her around Philly and show her my beautiful and beloved South Street. We're going to have a pictures-around-Philly day one day and I hope to be able to share that with you!

On the way home I conned a sweet lady out of her window seat (she was getting off at the next stop to see her son) and in doing so made a new friend. I hope she has a safe ride back to New England!

I cannot possibly thank Ally enough for this day. I had so so so much fun. Go check out her blog and when you're done, look at my recap of our last visit.
